Bucks for Birdies Program

     Registration Form      Pledge Form

Dear SDJGA member:
I’m Garrett Cypher and I have been a member of SDJGA for 8 years. I have played the challenging greens of Presidio to the long and difficult fairways of Torrey Pines thanks to the tournaments offered by SDJGA. These tournaments have introduced me to great friends and I have learned how to win and lose gracefully. Golf and SDJGA has shaped me into the person I am today.

To give back to SDJGA which is a non-profit association, I have created the“Bucks for Birdies” fundraiser. This is a season long fundraiser that rewards great holes during a tournament round.

Give the following pledge form to relatives, family friends, neighbors, and your parent’s co-workers. These family and friends will pledge money for pars, birdies, eagles, and holes-in-one. To give you an idea, in the 08-09 season, I had 35 birdies and 1 eagle. If my parents alone had pledged $5 a birdie and $10 for an eagle, I would have raised $185 for SDJGA. Think what we can all do together! Even if your final score is not what you had expected you can focus on the great holes you had.

Throughout the season your family and friends can watch your success on the SDJGA website on the leaderboard tab. At the end of the season, SDJGA will send the results to the pledge participants with your total. The player with the most pars (more for the younger divisions), birdies, eagles, and holes in one will also receive a special prize.

Here’s to recognizing your best golf! I hope you join me in participating. See you on the course,

Garrett Cypher

SUN SAFETEE

SUN SAFETEE TIPS

Sun protection is a lot like the game of golf. Both are built on a foundation of personal responsibility. Whether you are a junior golfer, or the parent of one, there are things that you can do to reduce your risk of damage to your skin from the sun’s UV radiation..

Absolutely use a sunscreen or sunblock. A good sunscreen is one of the first lines of defense in sun protection. It is important to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and be sure to use one that protects from both UVA and UVB rays. The label should state that it offers UVA and UVB protection or “Broad Spectrum” coverage.

Apply sunscreen and sun block 20 to 30 minutes before going into the sunlight and be sure to cover your ears, lips, nose and neck. If you are also using a bug repellent, apply the sunscreen first and wait before using the bug repellent.

One of the biggest misconceptions about sunscreen is that you can put it on in the morning and it will last all day long. Most sunscreens only last for two to three hours and then need to be reapplied. That is why we say Don’t Burn…Reapply at the turn”.   If golfers would heed that advice, they would go a long way to protecting their skin.

Clothing plays a big role in sun protection as well. Golfers seem very comfortable wearing long pants on the course but few wear long sleeves. New materials not only include a UPF rating (sort of an SPF rating for clothes) but also are very lightweight and comfortable for wearing long sleeves even in warm weather. Since many skin cancers appear on the ears, it is important to wear a hat with a wide brim. A good pair of UV protective sunglasses will help protect not only your eyes but also the area around your eyes.

Seek shade wherever you can. In the golf cart, under a tree and remember your umbrella is not just for rain; it can provide shade and newer umbrellas are made of fabrics that provide UV protection. Most pushcarts have an attachment to hold an umbrella and this is an ideal sun protection tool for junior golfers and adults. If you are a parent watching your child participate in a tournament, bring an umbrella out on the course for you as well.

If possible, avoid the sun when it is the strongest, which is from 10 am to 4pm. Of course as golfers this is not always possible so if you are going to be out in the sun during these hours, you need to be extra careful. Be sure to stay well hydrated by drinking water or caffeine-free drinks and juices.

The good news is that the sun doesn't have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks in the shade. And don't forget your sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, they make you look so cool!

The Sun SafeTee Program was developed to teach the golf community sun protection strategies and to provide the opportunity for the early detection of skin cancer. The goal of the Sun SafeTee Program is to help golfers enjoy a lifetime of healthy golf. If you would like to learn more or to donate to the program, contact Mark Wishner mwishner@sunsafetee.org

Policy Reminder/Updates

Spectator Guidelines
The spectator of any San Diego Junior Golf Association tournament assumes all risk and danger incidental to the game of golf and releases the San Diego Junior Golf Association, their host sites, presenting sponsors, participating players, and all agents thereof from any and all liabilities resulting from such cases.  With zero tolerance of these guidelines, the spectator will also agree and abide by the rules and regulations established by the Tournament Committee, and a violation of these rules and regulations can be cause for removal from the tournament.

  • Golf Carts are not permitted for use of a spectator, regardless of a disability.
  • All spectators must remain a minimum of 25 yards from the players.  Please remain on the cart path or in the rough at all times.
  • Spectators are never permitted in the fairway.
  • Please be aware of golfers on surrounding holes, and do not hinder their play.
  • All forms of communication are discouraged as it may be construed as advice and subject the player to disqualification. (Rule 8)
  • Please turn off all cell phones and electric devices.
  • Spectators can help look for lost balls and be a ball spotter, but cannot be involved in rulings.

Again, these guidelines will be strictly enforced with zero tolerance.  Spectators may be removed from the golf course without warning.  We hope that you enjoy your experience as a spectator and we thank you for the support of both the competitors and the San Diego Junior Golf Association.

Spectator Tips
We recommend that a spectator stay one shot in front of the group they are watching.  This means that while the group is on the tee, the spectator is on the cart path/rough beyond the landing area of the tee shots.  Spectators may assist in spotting golf balls.  As the group then hits their approach shots into the green the spectator should be in a safe area around the green.

Conversations between the spectators and players is prohibited.  Please keep all conversations with the player to words of cheer and encouragment.

If you would like to pass food or beverage on to the player, we recommend placing it in a position that will be easy to retrieve by the player, thus eliminating any risk of a conversational/communicational misunderstanding.

Late Registration Fee
Any player that register’s for a tournament after the registration deadline has passed is subject to availability in the tournament field and will be penalized a $20 late processing fee.

Cancellation Fee
There will be no refunds given to a player that cancels their tournament entry after they have been given a tee time.  A player may cancel a registration prior to receiving a tee time without penalty.

No Show Policy
It is a player’s responsibility to notify the SDJGA office if they will not be present for their tee time.  If a player does “No Show” to a tournament, that player will receive a 1st warning notice following that tournament.  Multiple “No Show’s” may lead to the suspension of a player’s SDJGA membership.
